Preventative Dentistry Calgary

Your Choice for Hygiene and Preventative Care North Calgary!

At Paramount Dental we provide hygiene/periodontal care! Whether you have healthy gums or are in a state of active periodontal disease, we are here to help! While your routine home maintenance and teeth cleaning is very helpful in reducing plaque and tartar buildup, you cannot prevent it completely. Professional cleaning is the only way to remove tartar. With regular hygiene visits including scaling and root planing procedures that remove plaque, tartar, and stain we can keep your gums healthy from top to bottom!

Regular periodontal and preventative maintenance visits help us break the stronghold of bacteria in your gums and slow or eliminate their destructive effects. As such, the removal of tartar and bacteria is crucial to treating gingivitis, controlling periodontal disease, and preventing tooth decay. We use an ultrasonic scaler, which consists of a wand with a small scaling tip that produces soft ultrasonic vibrations and a gentle flow of water. As the tip moves along the tooth surface, it creates small pulses that break up plaque, tartar, and other debris. Ultrasonic scaling has proven to be very effective in removing large debris below the gum line in a very quick and efficient manner. This allows for shorter appointments and improved comfort for patients. To ensure complete care, hand scaling is still always completed following the ultrasonic scaling.

As a general rule, Paramount Dental recommends hygiene/periodontal care visits twice yearly for maintenance and preventative care. However, your oral health status may dictate that you require more frequent visits. Depending on your Calgary preventative treatment schedule, your hygiene appointment may include:

  • A complete periodontal assessment
  • Root planing
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Taking x-rays to check bone levels (a good indicator of chronic gum and bone disease)
  • Measuring the depth of periodontal pockets
  • Checking for loose teeth or bleeding gums
  • Removing plaque or tartar above and below the gum line
    Polishing Teeth
  • Checking for any gum recession
  • Fluoride treatment (if chosen) to help prevent cavities
  • Reviewing your home care techniques and their resulting effectiveness
  • An Intra-oral exam to check the gum tissue, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health
  • An oral cancer screening and exam to check the tissues of the head, neck and jaw
